Academic Coaching sessions take place with students one-on-one. Based on both positive results and positive feedback from students and parents, I have made the decision to only work remotely via Zoom. This model has allowed me to increase the level of support I am able to provide as I am able to connect with students after school and during their school day during times that would otherwise not be used productively (such as study halls, or times before sports practices). It also allows me to connect with students more flexibly (quick check-ins multiple times a week instead of one longer session). And it means that parents no longer have to worry about transporting students to see me! It also allows me to work with students who are away at college or live in cities other than Philadelphia.
While each student is a unique learner with unique needs, most students benefit from coaching in all or many of the following areas:
- Understanding and confronting their barriers to success
- Creating and sustaining effective systems for organizing their materials (both physical and online)
- Learning skills to become more active learners
- Exploring and implementing strategies to improve reading comprehension
- Practicing effective study skills that improve conceptual understanding and memory retention
- Improving and demystifying key writing skills
- Utilizing effective note-taking techniques
- Investigating and understanding the relationship between attention, focus, motivation, and time-management
- Developing appropriate self-advocacy skills
- Managing test-taking anxiety by the demystification of assessment
- Understanding how to play ‘the game of school’ by exploring the hidden curriculum, and realizing that being smart and doing well at school are not synonymous
